- 1-inch, average home, no pets: every 60 to 90 days; monthly in peak summer.

- 1-inch, multiple pets, allergies, or asthma: every 30 days, sometimes sooner.
- 4- to 5-inch media filter: every 6 to 12 months.
- After remodeling, drywall work, or heavy dust: check within a week or two, since construction dust loads a filter fast.

What does MERV actually mean?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a rating from 1 to 16 (higher numbers for residential filters) that describes how well a filter captures particles of different sizes. The higher the MERV, the smaller the particles it traps, and the more resistance it creates to airflow. That trade-off is the catch. Here is what each range captures.

Why a higher MERV is not automatically better
It is tempting to think more MERV is always safer. It is not. A filter is a trade-off between how much it catches and how easily air passes through it.
Your AC blower is sized to move a set amount of air against a set resistance, measured as static pressure. A denser, higher-MERV filter is harder to pull air through. Drop a MERV 16 or true HEPA filter into a system designed for MERV 8, and you can starve the blower for airflow. That leads to:
- Weaker airflow at the vents, so rooms do not cool evenly.
- Higher energy use, as the blower works harder for less result.
- A colder-than-normal coil that can freeze over, the same failure a dirty filter causes, from the opposite direction.
- Extra strain on the blower motor.
So the "best" filter is not the one with the biggest number. It is the highest filtration your system can handle without choking airflow — on a lot of residential equipment, around MERV 13.
What MERV rating should I use?
For most homes here, MERV 8 to 13 is the sweet spot. How to narrow it down:
- No allergies, no pets: MERV 8 is a reliable, airflow-friendly choice.
- Pets, dust sensitivity, or mild allergies: step up to MERV 11.
- Asthma or stronger allergies: MERV 13 captures much finer particles and is usually the practical residential ceiling.
- Tempted by MERV 14 or higher: do not assume your system can handle it. That level belongs to equipment built for it, so have it checked first.

How do I read the filter size printed on the frame?
You do not need to measure. The size is almost always printed on the cardboard edge of the old filter, as three numbers like 16x25x1 or 20x20x4. The first two are length and width in inches; the third is thickness (1 inch, 2 inch, 4 inch, and so on).
One wrinkle: the printed "nominal" size is rounded. A filter labeled 16x25x1 usually measures closer to 15.5 x 24.5 inches so it slides in easily. That is normal — buy the nominal size printed on the frame, and snap a photo before you toss the old one.
What are the signs your AC filter needs changing?
Do not wait for a reminder if you notice any of these:
- You can no longer see light through it when you hold it up.
